The New Black and Old Hat

After returning from a short stint in Darwin and the Daly River region, the coverage of Rosemount Australian Fashion Week seems more hysterical and sad than usual. There's the celebration of all things smug and ugly (Ksubi), or just plain stoopid (Alice McCall), and the depressing attempt to latch onto the tail-end of northern hemisphere trends (tunic & babydoll/jersey & futuristic & sporty).
So !yay! for the fresh Autumnal breeze that was Lee Matthews. Sweet without being infantile, feminine sans frou-frou, and relaxed rather than derelict. http://www.smh.com.au/ftimages/2007/05/04/1177788383295.html
As a long-time follower, I am thrilled to finally see her at fashion week. Less gimmick, more style.

And the pick of this year's fashion week no-shows is newish comer Carl. Cate Blanchett is a fan, as am I. His garments' striking silhouettes are carefully articulated & beautifully executed. There has been a dearth of strongly tailored clothing for women in Australian fashion, mostly due to the overriding beach/boho style. Carl is bringing back the serious stuff, but with a softly sexy spin. www.carl.net.au
